College Student Grocery List: Cheap, Easy Groceries for One
Updated October 21, 2026
A student grocery list has to be cheap, quick and workable in a small kitchen or a dorm. This list covers a week for 1 student, grouped by store section, with quantities worked out so you buy enough without wasting money or food. It leans on staples that go a long way, plus a few backups for the days you have no time to cook.
In short: below you will find the full list, tips for eating well on a student budget and in a small kitchen, and a button to put the whole list on your phone. Check off what you already have first, then shop.

Talklist keeps your list sorted by store section as you shop, lets you check items off, and lets you share it with whoever else is shopping. You can also add anything missing by saying it out loud: "a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs and a pack of microwave rice".

Shopping on a student budget
- Plan a few meals. Pick 3 or 4 meals you can cook from the same ingredients.
- Buy staples. Eggs, rice, pasta, beans, oats and peanut butter make many meals for little money.
- Use frozen vegetables. They keep and go in almost anything.
- Share costs. Splitting big packs with roommates can lower the cost. Keep a shared list so nobody buys duplicates.
- Check unit prices. A larger pack is not always cheaper.
Small kitchen or dorm tips
- Know your equipment. Plan around a microwave, a kettle or a single pan if that is all you have.
- Choose items with a long shelf life if storage is small.
- Keep a few backups. Frozen meals and instant noodles cover busy days.
- Label shared fridge items so they do not get eaten by mistake.
