Costco Shopping List: A Bulk Stock-Up List for a Family of 4
Updated October 21, 2026
Costco is a membership warehouse club, so the trip is different from a normal grocery run: you buy bigger packs, less often, and the list matters more because it is easy to leave with things you did not plan to buy. This list is a stock-up trip for a family of 4, grouped by store section, with quantities worked out for roughly a month of staples. It is written as generic items, not specific products, because stock and pack sizes vary by warehouse and change over time.
In short: below you will find the full list, tips for buying in bulk without waste, and how to freeze what you will not use quickly, and a button to put the whole list on your phone. Check off what you already have first, then shop.

Talklist keeps your list sorted by store section as you shop, lets you check items off, and lets you share it with whoever else is shopping. You can also add anything missing by saying it out loud: "a case of sparkling water, a big bag of rice and two packs of paper towels".
The Costco shopping list
Quantities are approximate and start at 4 people; change the number above and they update. Items marked (optional) are nice to have, not essential. Make it yours: quantities assume a family of 4 and a trip every few weeks. Reduce them if you have less freezer or pantry space, and remove anything your household does not use.

How to shop Costco with a list
- Check your freezer and pantry first. Bulk shopping only saves money if you do not buy duplicates and you have room to store it.
- Buy bulk only what you will use. A big pack of something that spoils before you finish it is not a bargain.
- Group the list by store section. Warehouses are large. A list sorted by section keeps you from wandering back and forth.
- Compare unit prices. A bigger pack is not always cheaper per ounce or per pound; check the price per unit when you can.
- Plan to freeze. Meat, bread, shredded cheese and many other items freeze well. Split big packs into portions when you get home.
What bulk shopping is best for
- Long-lasting staples: rice, pasta, canned goods, oils, coffee, flour and sugar.
- Frozen food: vegetables, fruit, fish and meat you can portion and freeze.
- Household supplies: paper towels, toilet paper, dish soap, trash bags and laundry detergent.
- Fresh food you will use quickly: items you cook with every week, such as chicken, potatoes, onions and carrots.
